You count on your sump pump to prevent water buildup in your basement. Make sure you do the right thing in installation and maintenance. There are several things to remember when dealing with basement water issues.

One: Although sump pumps are durable and long lasting, they do require proper installation. And you must keep the area around them clear in order to prevent fouling.

Two: Be watchful for damage in your basement. Water intrusion may cause serious damage to floors and wall. If dealing with this is out of your area of expertise, don’t hesitate to call in a qualified contractor to give you an estimate.

Three: If you do try to do a pump replacement yourself, be very careful with the electrical part of the installation. You know that water and electricity are a dangerous combination. Get a pro to help if you need to. It will be worth it in the long run.

Four: If you need a complete sump system put in place, you should really think twice about attempting this yourself. The code requirements vary by area. The proper setup is vital to the function of your system when you need it.

You can’t help but learn something valuable if you look into dealing with your basement water removal system yourself. But what you learn may be that you really need to have a qualified professional install that sump pump system.

When your garbage disposal fails, there are a several things you can do before resorting to calling a professional plumbing contractor.

1. Is there a reset button?

There is usually a reset button on the bottom of a disposal unit. Press that and see if you have solved your problem.

2. Is it jammed?

Disposals often come supplied with a hex wrench to use in freeing a jam. The socket will beon the bottom of the unit. Try to move it back and forth to free up that jam.

3. Is the power on?

Check switches, breakers, and fuses to be sure the power is getting to the disposal. If your unit is plugged into a socket under the sink, as is often the case, you might test with a small appliance to be sure the socket is live.

4. Is it leaking?

Locate the leak. If the leak is in the plumbing, fix it if you can, or call in the plumber. But a leaking disposal unit may mean a problem that will require the disposal to be replaced. Often that is the most economical choice, rather than getting into the inner workings of the unit.

5. Do you have a broken blade?

If your disposal turns freely but doesn’t process the garbage, then you likely have a broken blade problem. That is another case where replacement is the more economical choice.

The household garbage disposal is normally a long lasting fixture. When properly installed and used according to directions, they often last ten years or even longer. But eventually you may face the bad disposal problem and need to call the contractor to get yourself a new garbage disposal installed.

Do you feel that a reverse osmosis water treatment system might work for you? Many water treatment customers choose RO for its reasonable cost and ease of installation. A person handy with tools could install the system for himself or herself and get a great drinking water system at a low cost.

Reasons to choose reverse osmosis for your water treatment need might be:

1. You want a supply of drinking or cooking water for home or office.

2. You feel good about the safety of your water supply, but want to improve the taste.

3. You feel confident you can do the installation and maintenance.

If the above statements fit your situation, you may be ready to install and maintain your own RO system and enjoy great drinking water for not much money. Do please make sure to inform yourself about proper installation and maintenance. A badly installed or poorly maintained system will not deliver the quality water you desire.

There are several reasons why RO alone may not be the best solution for you. They include:

1. Bacterial contaminates in your water supply.

2. Radon in your water.

3. A need for large quantities of treated water.

Bacterial contamination of your incoming water supply will require purification before other treatment. Radon is a serious health risk and reverse osmosis systems will have little or no effect on that issue. In addition, a demand for large quantities of treated water will probably be best met by other measures.

If you have a large water need or serious contamination issues, you will probably want to consult a professional. A water treatment specialist or your plumber can set you on the right track. Analysis of your need by a qualified expert will help you decide if a reverse osmosis system is the right solution for your needs.

If your heating system is routinely maintained, chances are that you will have to do little more than turn on the thermostat to get your entire home up to the right temperature to keep you and your family warm.

There are some things you can do before you call a heating contractor if your system fails to work properly.

1. Make sure it has power – You may have blown a fuse and this may be the reason that your system is not working properly. Most fuses are easy repairs that can be done by you.

2. Separate Switch - If your system has a separate switch, you should check and make sure that it is turned on. If this was your problem, your furnace should bring your home up to temperature fairly quickly.

3 Reset Buttons – Simply resetting your furnace may start it back up again. If you’re unsure how long it has been stopped, wait 30 minutes and see if the motor comes back on. If it does not it is probably time to call a heating contractor.

4. Fuel Source – For oil heat make sure that you have sufficient oil in your tank to reach your furnace. Gas heater owners should make sure that not only is the gas turned on but that the pilot is lit as well.

5. Thermostat - Try resetting your thermostat to a higher temperature. Normally 5 or 10 degrees increase in the current setting will be sufficient to determine if your system will come back on. Don’t forget to turn it back down once the system comes back on.

After you have taken these steps your furnace should be working. If not, it is time to call a heating specialist to come in and determine what the problem is.

None of us wants to think about hiring a plumber, but unfortunately, it is not always an option to not hire one. However, if you are going to hire a plumber there are some steps you can take that will ensure you get the right plumber the first time!

1. Ask about a license: Do not hire an unlicensed plumber, you are just asking for trouble! All reputable plumbing contractors are properly licensed and fully prepared to show you the documentation to prove it.

2. Ask about experience: Imagine getting someone in your home to replace a leaking pipe behind a wall and discovering that the person there has no idea how to get to the pipe behind the wall with the least amount of damage? Make sure you ask specifically what level of experience a plumber has on the job you need done.

3. Estimates are important: Find out what the plumber figures it is going to cost you. While it is only an estimate, chances are that it will provide you with more information than if you did not request it at all. A written estimate is your right as a client!

4. Ask for References: It is pretty unusual that any plumber would not offer you customer testimonials and references. If a plumber is unwilling to offer you a reference, run, do not walk and find someone else. Make sure you actually speak to the reference (preferably someone who has had similar work done) and find out if they were happy with the quality, charges and professionalism.

5. Costs: While it is typically true that the lowest priced plumber is not necessarily the plumber you want, you also do not want to run up the national debt having a leak repaired. Make sure you ask your plumber up front about their fee schedule.

These five simple tips will help you decide on the right plumber for your repairs. Do not leave your plumbing to inexperienced, untried plumbers; hire an expert in their field with the history and references to back them up.
